The experience
See the amazing geological formations under Loulé at the Rock Salt Mine
Deep under the city of Loulé lies Techsalt's Rock Salt Mine. This rocky-road tour might become the most memorable part of your trip to the sun-kissed Algarve.
Travel over 200 metres down, deep into the Portuguese underground with your guides, Fininho and Salty, the mine's mascots, and your small group. Discover geological formations that are millions of years old, and learn about the history of the mining industry in Loulé, the changing mining processes and the evolution of the machinery used in this still-active mine.
The temperature in the mine stays stable all-year-round, at around 23 - 24 degrees Celsius. So you can explore 1.3 km of the galleries and chambers in comfort, with the help and interpretation of a guide. You'll learn all about the geological and industrial importance and applicability of rock salt.
Finally, enjoy the art dedicated to Saint Barbara, patron saint of miners and other arts, through the colorful exhibition by contemporary artist Klaus Zylla.
