Ride the original mine train and slide down wooden miner’s slides
The experience
Discover Salzburg’s Salt Mines, a journey deep into the Austrian Alps. Begin by meeting at Mirabellplatz 2 in Salzburg's city center for a shuttle to the Hallein salt mines.
Your guide will lead you through ancient tunnels, where you'll ride the original mine train and slide down wooden miners’ slides. Cross an underground salt lake on a raft and see a branch covered with salt crystals.
Learn about salt’s rich history as the "white gold" that shaped civilizations. Around 250 million years ago, a vast salt lake in the region left behind deposits that tectonic forces still push into the Alps today. Learn about the Celts’ early salt mining and how Salzburg’s Prince-Archbishops used salt wealth to fund grand architecture.
Dress warmly for the cool mine; a white miner’s suit will be provided. After the tour, visit the Salzwelten shop for salt-themed souvenirs.
